CCI named YMCA-Quebec’s 2010 Peace Medal Finalist!
Year after year, CCI’s daily commitment is to have the public shake off its indifference and ‘I don’t care’ attitude, and to remind each and every one of us of the promises we made to the world’s children and to our own future. Peace is created through one child at a time, one after the other, and CCI creates it each day. Not only does peace play a predominant role in our daily efforts, but we expend tons of energy simply to inspire peace around us. On November 20, 2010, CCI felt privileged to be among the finalists for the YMCA-Quebec 2010 Peace Medal; we received this honour in the name of Devi, Dhanna, Appiyyamma, Ammorru, Laïla, Pydiraju, Yerrama, and hundreds of other children.

Since our creation in 2000, our leitmotiv has been to protect and enhance childhood, and actively fight against the exploitation of children through labour. At this moment, we are managing three projects in India and Thailand, working with children and their families who find themselves in dire situations. We work with local partners, our role being that of a companion in action, just like a lever that encourages the dynamics of development. We see our own support as complementing the efforts, knowledge and resources of our local partners and population.

Comments made by Christine Durocher, President of CCI’s Board of Directors:
“Thanks to CCI’s commitment to defend the rights of children, Laïla, who was orphaned since her mother burned to death by the hand of her own husband in a quarrel because of debts, recovered her rights to a happy childhood and to education. Thanks to CCI’s dogged perseverance in fighting against child labour, Ammorru and Pydiraju abandoned their dangerous life as fisher boys and presently attend secondary school. Thanks to CCI’s intent to combat premature marriages and lack of schooling for girls, Dhanna and Devi are in college, pursuing degrees. They are getting the best grades in their district, and dreaming of becoming a physician and a social worker respectively.”

CCI is extremely happy to see its work for the past 10 years rewarded by being named a finalist for YMCA-Quebec’s 2010 Peace Medal! The fight is far from having been won however, and this honour only encourages us to pursue our efforts here and around the world. Nevertheless, we cannot do anything without all of you who support us. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
