Objectives:
- To provide a lasting mantle of security for young girls freed from sexual exploitation through a long-term multi-sector approach: sheltering, security, readjustment, reintegration, repatriation and follow-up services; and
- to combat human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
Activities:
- The liberation of children from sexual exploitation;
- prosecution of the exploiters;
- free legal assistance to victims, and protection during court proceedings so as to prevent their being victimised once again;
- shelter, security and complete readjustment services (psycho-social and medical care, including treatment for HIV/AIDS and reproductive health care);
- guarantee of access to formal education and career training programmes;
- development of professional skills, and provision of career training counselling as well as assistance to find employment, including individualised follow-up programmes;
- reintegration services and socio-economic support such as micro-credit programmes;
- repatriation services, awareness-raising of communities, and counsel to families with a view to reducing the social stigmatisation of young girls, and facilitating their reintegration within their society.
Results:
- On an annual basis, freedom from commercial sexual exploitation for 300 young girls;
- escalation in the number of legal prosecutions of pimps, traffickers and other exploiters;
- increase in the number of young girls who benefit from legal services;
- improvement in the state of health and psychological welfare of these young ladies;
- progress in their socialisation, self-confidence, and reaching fulfillment;
- greater numbers of young girls who have been reunited with their families;
- development of the young girls’ professional skills and/or their increased schooling;
- increase in the number of young girls who, in the long term, will be able to find a decent job because of their training, thus putting them out of danger from exploitation;
- their enjoying a larger income thanks to the micro-credit system; and
- communities and families being more aware of the rights of women and victims of trafficking.
The Rescue Foundation of India Received 2010 Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award
The annual Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award (ADHRA) was established by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy in 2006 to encourage individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to promoting democracy and advancing human rights through peaceful means in Asia. 2010 Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award would be given to India’s Rescue Foundation for praising them to rescue, rehabilitate and repatriate unfortunate girls and women who are trafficked from different parts of India Nepal and Bangladesh. India’s Rescue Foundation was established in 2000 by Mr. Balkrishna Acharya. The Mumbai based foundation mainly focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating and repatriating females who were trafficked from different parts of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. Rescue Foundation is the largest NGO in India in saving human trafficking victims, and it is also the only NGO providing integrated services for these girls to get back to the society. In 2006, the current President of the foundation, Ms. Triveni Balkrishna Acharya, received the award of 'women of peace' by the Women Peace Power Foundation, U.S. for the achievement of Rescue Foundation.
